Step up for Soldiers assists families making homes handicap accessible for those returning home with lifelong disabilities. 4th Annual Pro/Am Silvagni Benefit Surf Contest – This competition will be held August 1st and 2nd with divisions including Pro Short Board & Long Board as well as Amateur Short Board & Long Board. Join your Local Law Enforcement Officers for National Night Out – The 26th Annual National Night Out, a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 4th. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and are fighting back. The Carolina Beach Police Department and Police Advisory Committee along with the NHC Sheriff’s Department Crime Prevention Unit will be on the Boardwalk with handouts, prizes and tips for parents. Please come out and join us as we celebrate National Night Out.

Don’t miss this Chance to Spotlight your Pet with Coastal K-9 Bakery- The deadline is fast approaching for the "How Does Your Dog Sleep?" photo contest at Coastal K-9 Bakery. Big Print Block Party Art Exhibition presented by Cape Fear Press – The past met the present when twelve contemporary artists took on the oldest form of printmaking to make giant, original prints on May 16th. Come see the giant 4x8 foot prints that were printed with a steamroller in Carolina Beach. This work is from the first event of its kind in the southeast. Participating artists included Stephan Bode, Todd Carignan, Alex Clark, Kristin Gibson, Jennifer Page and many more. The opening reception is July 24th from 6-9 p.m. at 110 N. The Help Center of Federal Point to Hold Chinese Auction – This Saturday at 1:00 p.m. come to the Katie B. Hines Senior Center for the Help Center’s Summer Fundraiser. The Senior Center is located at 308 Cape Fear Boulevard in Carolina Beach. Admission is only $5.00 and includes mini-raffle tickets as well as a chance for a door prize and great sweepstakes items. John the Ashley High School Boosters for a Beach Sweep – This Sunday starting at 5:00 p.m., come down to the public access at Tennessee Avenue to help with this year’s beach sweep. Check in with Sara Hartman who will check you in and give you gloves and trash bags. Parents, if you drop off your children, please plan to pick them up in about an hour. The area to be cleaned is from Tennessee Avenue to Spartenburg Avenue. Please park in the Ocean Grill Parking lot across the street from the restaurant. Let the attendant know that you are with the Ashley boosters and have permission to park there. DO NOT park in the hotel’s parking lot. 2009 Coastal Plain League All Star Game Hosted by the Wilmington Sharks – The All Star Game Festivities will begin on Monday, July 20th when the Wilmington Sharks will host the All-star Fan Fest and Home Run Derby. Fans will have the chance to meet both CPL All-Star teams during that time and then look on as 16 of the best hitters in the league battle it out in the annual Home Run Derby. Tuesday, join the Sharks at Buck Hardee Field for the 2009 Coastal Plain League All Star Game. The Last Resort is "CALLING ALL MERCHANTS" – A "Save the Ta Tas" Breast Cancer Event will be held at the Last Resort on Sunday, August 2nd benefiting Coastal Care Van, a non-profit organization offering mammograms to residents of New Hanover County who cannot afford them. The evening will consist of a bachelor auction, activities, dinner, and a Pink Balloon Purchase where each balloon purchased will have a gift attached to it. The Last Resort is asking for contributions of gift certificates for dinners and events as well as retail shops, services, etc. Cash donations are also gratefully accepted. All contributions must be received by July 20th. Please call Nancy Reis (910-458-5167) for any questions or to have your contribution picked up. The North Carolina Aquarium Offers Canoeing Opportunities – The NC Aquarium offers a canoeing program that takes participants on a 3 hour exploration of Zeke’s Island Estuarine Research Reserve, one of the most unusual areas of the North Carolina coast. The trip includes an almost one mile paddle across the basin to Zeke’s Island. At the island, participants search for blue crabs, small fish and invertebrates using crab rigs and dip nets, and also learn how to use cast and seine nets to catch fish. The program is for ages 8 and up and children 8-12 must be accompanied by 2 adults. The fee is $25.00 per participant and admission to the Aquarium is not included. Pre-registration is required. The next class will be held Saturday, July 11 at 9:00 a.m. and Sunday, July 19th at 2:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.ncaquariums.com

Boardwalk Makeover Presents the Second "Battle of the Bands" – On Saturday, July 11th from 1-5 p.m., come out to the beach stage for the third and final round of preliminaries in the Boardwalk Blast: Battle of the Bands. Each band competing will play for 30 minutes and will be judged by a group of area professionals in the music industry. The finals will be August 8th. Weekly Event Reminder

American Legion’s Monthly Fish Fry From 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. tomorrow, the American Legion Pleasure Island Post 129 is offering Fresh Fried Fish, Cole Slaw, Corn on the Cob, Hush Puppies, Potato Salad, Iced Tea and Coffee all for $8.00 per person. Celebrate the Fourth of July all week long at Shanty’s Beach and Blues Club – Shanty’s has an entire week of festivities planned for the Island. On Thursday, come out and enjoy the Fantastic Shakers from 8:00-12:00; Friday it’s Sea Cruz with Deejay Steve Carter from 7:00-12:00; Saturday it’s Deejay Steve Harter from High Rock Lake, Lexington, NC and Sunday from 5:00-9:00 it’s the Tam’s with 14kt gold. Come Out and Support the Pleasure Island Lifeguard Association – On Friday, July 3rd, at 6:00 p.m., come down behind the Gazebo at the Boardwalk for a Shrimp-a-Roo hosted by the Pleasure Island Lifeguard Association. This yearly event features fabulous shrimp donated by Blackburn Brothers Seafood, hush puppies and slaw donated by Michael’s Seafood Restaurant and Bowman’s Seafood. Donations are accepted for plates of food. Come out and show your support for this vital organization.

Island Colors to Hold 4th of July Sidewalk Sale – Island Colors will host their first sidewalk sale. The sale will include discounts from 25-50% off retail prices on select Fresh Produce, Sandalz and Jimmy Buffett’s Caribbean Soul flip-flops and sandals, Sunburn men’s tees, Calypso Studios Sea Glass, Baked Beads jewelry and much more. The North Carolina Aquarium to be open on 4th of July – The Aquarium will be open its regular hours on Saturday, July 4th from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Come in and cool off while you tour their exhibits, including Luna, an albino American alligator. Programs are offered every 30 minutes and range from dive shows at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., feedings at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., films, animal encounters and more.
