Tuscan Grill to Host Live Music on Saturday Night – Live at the Tuscan Grill on Saturday, August 22nd will be Cary B playing from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Along with the live music, the Tuscan Grill is again offering food specials including: Tuscan Bean Soup, Chicken with Portabello Mushroom Ravioli, Halibut Oscar Style, Porterhouse Grilled Pork Chop with Sautéed Onions and Mushrooms, Tuscan’s Sicilian Meatloaf, Rotisserie Prime Beef with Au Jus and Seafood Pasta. Hope for the Warriors to host 9-11 Hope Ride - Hope for the Warriors will conduct this cycling event in order to provide a cycling experience for combat wounded service members from Iraq and Afghanistan. Their first goal is rehabilitation and recreation. Secondary to the mission is to provide awareness for Hope for the Warriors and its many programs and to assist in fundraising efforts. The event will begin at the Carolina Beach Lake Park on Friday, September 11th at 8:45 a.m. with a welcoming and send off ceremony. Mayor Joel Macon will preside along with special support from the Carolina Beach Fire and Police and Operations Department. Immediately following the ceremony, the Warriors will depart for the Fort Fisher Ferry. The Hope for the Warriors program would like to thank the Golden Sand Hotel for providing the lodging for these warriors and the Ocean Grill and Tiki Bar for providing the Friday morning breakfast at 7:00 a.m. For more information on the program, please visit www.hopeforthewarriors.org.

Fisherman’s Post to Host NC Flatfish Championships – Fisherman’s Post Newspaper will be hosting their Second Annual Fall Flounder Tournament on September 18th and 19th out of Joyner Marina. Registration is Friday, September 18th or you can pre-register at Island Tackle & Hardware and the one day of fishing is Saturday, September 19th. There is over $14,000 in prize money offered. The Seventh Annual Southern Coastal Bluegrass Festival is Coming- The Thalian Association is proud to present the Seventh Annual Bluegrass Festival at Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area on September 19th and 20th. This years bands include A Deeper Shade of Blue, Carolina Junction, The Hagar’s Mountain Boys, Ken Scoggins & Miller’s Creek, L Shape Lot, R.C. Harris and Blue Denim, Ted Jones & The Tarheel Boys and the Wells Family. Advance tickets are $10.00 each day. At the gate tickets will be $15.00 each day or $25.00 for the weekend. The Big Beach Sweep is Coming – On September 26th at 9:00 the Annual Big Sweep will be taking place. If you would like to help in cleaning up our waterway, meet at the Boardwalk Gazebo in Carolina Beach or the Kure Beach Pier in Kure Beach. Bring sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Island Women to Host 2nd Annual Women’s Health Summit – Saturday, October 17th at the Beach House at Fort Fisher Recreation Area, Island Women will be hosting the 2nd Annual Women’s Health Summit. Registration Fee is $75.00 but if you register before September 30th, the fee is only $55.00. This fee covers spa snack, spa lunch, seminars and Exhibit Hall fees. Topics to be discussed include "Educate before you Vaccinate", "What in the Cell is Going On?", "Do you need to Detox", "Bio-Identical Hormones for Women 35 and up" and "Thyroid Dysfunction Despite Normal Test Results". Kure Beach Community Center’s Annual Barbeque – Come out to the Kure Beach Community Center on Saturday, August 15th for their Annual Barbeque. They will be serving Barbecued Pulled Pork from Bowman’s, Buttered Parsley Potatoes, Cole Slaw, Beans, Sweet/UnSweet Tea and Homemade Desserts. The barbeque takes place from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and tickets are just $7.00 at the Door. Take outs will also be offered. The Kure Beach Community Center is located on 3rd Avenue just behind Big Daddy’s.

Calling all Artists – On August 15 and 16, the Pleasure Island Artist Guild will be holding the 1st Annual Art Show by the Lake. The art show, to be held at the Carolina Beach Lake Park, will feature fine arts and crafts, music dance and drama and hands on kids art. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Salty Paws Festival Planning is Underway – Planning is underway right now. The Salty Paws Festival will be held Saturday, October 17th from noon to 5:00 p.m. at the Carolina Beach Lake Park. There will be kids activities, pet contests, food, music, arts and crafts, pet education, pet adoptions, microchipping and more. All proceeds benefit the local animal rescues. Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival Poster Contest Coming to a Close – August 22, 2009 will bring to a close the 2009 Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival Poster Contest. If you are interested in entering a work of art for this contest please be advised that all entries must be a flat work of art no smaller than 11" x 14" and no larger than 18" x 24". Please do not submit work on stretched, framed canvas or canvas board. All lettering is prohibited yet poster must be representative of the Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival. Contest winner will receive $200, VIP treatment at the festival, recognition for the poster graphic and will have the opportunity to sign posters at the Festival in the Fine Arts Plaza.
