PLEASURE ISLAND HAPPENINGS!

Start Your Saturday Off Right with Island Women – 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Island Women will be hosting their 2nd Annual Yard & Bake Sale at 206 Fayetteville Avenue in Carolina Beach in the parking lot of Victory Beach Vacations. All proceeds are dedicated to the beautification of Pleasure Island. Be sure to stop by and pick up that unique treasure.

1st Annual Tri-4-Rye is here – On Saturday, April 18th, head down to the Hamlet Beach Access in Carolina Beach for this wonderful event benefiting the Carolina Beach Elementary School. This triathlon is a celebration of Island Life in honor Ryan McKee, life long resident of Pleasure Island who tragically lost his life last year. The triathlon consists of a 2-mile bike race, a 2-mile beach run and a 3-tier sandcastle building contest. Entry is $20 per person or $30 if you need a beach cruiser bike. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. with the race starting at 9:15. All competitors will receive a complimentary ticket to the Pleasure Island Chowder Cook Off where an award ceremony will take place at 1:00 p.m.

Is there anything better than a warm Spring Day on Pleasure Island? – Of course, if you’re at the Carolina Beach Lake sampling Chowder from some of the area’s best restaurants. But, chowder isn’t the only you’ll find at the 13th Annual Pleasure Island Chowder Cook Off. There will also be live music by Category 4 and Triple Play all day and our fabulous Kidz Zone for the youngsters. Admission is only $5 and the gates open at 11:30 a.m. Park for free at the Federal Point Shopping Center and ride the Wilmington Trolley to the lake, also for free.

Celebrate Women’s Night Out at the Clubhouse – Clean out those closets and bring the leftovers to the Clubhouse. If you can’t wear it, and it’s in GREAT conditions, bring it to the style swap. The swap will take place April 19th from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. There is a $15.00 entry fee. Bring 2 nice things, one accessory and anything you want to donate. Games will be played to see who gets what and you’ll also have a fun time just swapping. A dressing area will be provided along with wine, coffee and cheesecake. Please RSVP to (910) 264-7379.

N.C. Aquarium to Host 5K Race for the Planet Seahorse Sprint – On Sunday, April 19th, come down to the Aquarium for the 5K Race for the Planet Seahorse Sprint. Registration begins at 7:00 with the race kicking off at 8:00 a.m. The race will start at the Aquarium and take you through scenic Fort Fisher. Also, sign the little ones up for the salt marsh and crabbing expedition. There will be live music by The Casserole, Refreshments, Vendors and Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 males and females in each category.

11th Annual Shrimp Open Golf Tournament to be held April 20th – The golf tournament benefiting Cystic Fibrosis and Duke University Lung Transplant Research will be held April 20th at Echo Farms Golf Club in Wilmington. It is an 18 hole Captain’s Choice Tournament with a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start. After the tournament, a Shrimp-a-Roo will be held at Michael’s with an all-u-can-eat buffet, cash bar, auction and live entertainment. Teams will be selected by a random drawing. Golfers of ALL abilities are welcome. Prizes will be awarded to the top 2 teams, closest to the pins, longest and shortest drives. For more information, please call 458-7761.

With the arrival of Spring comes the Kure Beach Street Festival – On April 25th starting at 11:00 a.m., head on down to Kure Beach for their 3rd Annual Street Festival. There will be live music, good food, arts and crafts, plenty of dancing and a gigantic fireworks display at dusk. Some of the bands performing include The Sandy Bottom Beach Boys (bluegrass), Brunswick County Band (jazz), Diane and Tony (oldies, country, blues and more) and Shamalama (Beach, blues, Top 40 and more) The festival takes place on K Avenue in front of the Kure Beach Pier. Entrance to the festival is free.

Kure Memorial Lutheran Church Presents Kentucky Derby Day – This "Run for the Roses" event is a fundraiser for the KMLC. The Derby Day is scheduled for May 2nd from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. on the lawn at KMLC located at 117 North Third Street in Kure Beach. Come out to support the Church Council "Jockeys" as they ride their horses across the finish line. Dress Code is hats for the ladies and bowties for the men. There will be a contest for Judge’s Choice for best hat and best bowtie. Southern style food and beverages will be available. Show your support to your favorite Jockey with a minimum pledge of $2.00.
