Wilmington Sharks to Host 2009 Coastal Plain League All-Star Game – The Coastal Plain League announced that the 2009 All-Star Game will be hosted by the Wilmington Sharks on July 21, 2009 at Buck Hardee Field in Wilmington. The All-Star game festivities will begin on Monday, July 20th, when the Sharks will host the All-Star Fan Fest and Home Run Derby. Fans will have the chance to meet both CPL All-Star teams during that time and then look on as 16 of the best hitters in the league battle it out in the annual Home Run Derby. This week at Chick-Fil-A is Customer Appreciation Week – Each night during the week of June 15th, Chick-Fil-A is offering it’s customers something exciting for Customer Appreciation Week. Even more exciting is that on Thursday night at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk, Chick-fil-A will be hosing the Extreme Tailgating Event from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. They will have FREE Chick-fil-A Sandwiches (while supplies last) and FREE kid’s games and photos with the Chick-fil-A Kid Cow. Rip Current Awareness– In light of the recent tragedies on Pleasure Island due to Rip Currents, Bob Lewis from The Last Resort is starting the Pleasure Island Rip Tide Awareness Campaign to educate the public on Rip Currents. Bob is challenging the local businesses to pitch in and help get enough Rip Tide Awareness Posters printed so that each business, real estate company, property rental company and individual owners of condo/beach house rentals can display and educate the public on a daily basis. While our lifeguards, fire and safety rescue personnel and the police department are doing a wonderful job, we need to do our part to help educate the public immediately. Bob has volunteered to organize, collect donations for printing expenses and will also go around to the local businesses and distribute the information. This film stars the vocal talents of Matthew Broderick, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Watson, Tracey Ullman and Kevin Klein. The movies start at 8:45 p.m.

Michael's Seafood International Chowder Champ
Over the last wekend, Michael McGowan of Michael's Seafood Restaurant in Carolina Beach brought nearly 200 gallons of his locally famous chowder along with a little help from employees and familly, up to Newport Rhode Island. Their mission was to compete in the Schweppes Great Chowder Cook off and show the world that North Carolina knows good seafood chowder. After many grueling days of preparation and traveling, it all paid off for Michael as his Capt. M's Seafood Chowder took the prestigious honor of first place in the competition's "Seafood Chowder" category.
Michael's seafood Restaurant and Catering is located at 1206 North Lake Park Boulevard in Carolina Beach. Michael and wife Shelly are excited about winning the award. The served nearly 160 gallons of their delicious chowder, (1 and 1/2 ounces at a time), to over 20,000 people who attended the world renowned event.

During the entire month, each Wednesday and Friday, Pleasure Island will be featured in the station’s news block from 5 to 6:30 p.m. On Friday, live news cut ins will occur during the newscast from different locations on the Island. During the month of June, representatives will be on the Island offering special low cost advertising packages to the local merchants on the Island. These packages will offer a complete marketing campaign on two televisions stations and their websites along with free production being included. Beach Music Festival is Here! – Back on the Beach this year will be the 24th Annual Beach Music Festival! The festival scheduled for June 6th includes such great bands as Jim Quick and Coastline, Sammy O’Banion with Mardi Gras, Holiday Band, Craig Woolard Band and Mark Roberts and Breeze. Tickets are on sale now at the Chamber offices or through www.Etix.com Advance tickets are $10.00 and tickets at the gate will be $15.00. Also, don’t miss the 4th Annual Shag Competition the night before at Shanty’s Beach and Blues Club. Registration starts at 6:00 with the competition kicking off at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 in advance and $8.00 at the door and are available at the Chamber offices. American Legion’s Monthly Fish Fry – From 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. today, the American Legion Pleasure Island Post 129 is offering Fresh Fried Fish, Cole Slaw, Corn on the Cob, Hush Puppies, Potato Salad, Iced Tea and Coffee all for $8.00 per person. The American Legion Post is located at 1500 Bridge Barrier Road so swing on by for your plate now. The Legion Pavilion is also available for rent for wedding receptions, private parties, meetings and more. Rental includes tables, chairs, restrooms, hearing/air conditioning and an outdoor gazebo. Beach Music Weekend Kick-Off at The Last Resort – We are kicking off the Beach Music Weekend at the Last Resort Beach Bar on Friday, June 5th with "Bakatcha" a beach music and oldies band who will be playing your favorite beach music, oldies and music to dance to under the "Love Shack Cabana". Music starts at 7:00 p.m. Also starting next week on Tuesday nights will be member "Cornhole". The Last Resort is looking to sign up teams of two for an ongoing league. www.carolinabeachbar.com.

Port City Java Presents an Author Reading with James J. Collins – On Saturday, June 13th at 3:00 p.m., join Author James J. Collins for a reading of his new novel Nuclear Nightmare: An Espionage Thriller at Port City Java located at 1328 N. Lake Park Boulevard in The Pavilion. The Thalian Association Presents the Seventh Annual Southern Coastal Bluegrass Festival - The Bluegrass Festival is coming September 19th and 20th at Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area. The bands this year include A Deeper Shade of Blue, Carolina Junction, The Hagar’s Mountain Boys, Ken Scoggins & Miller’s Creek, L Shaped Lot, R.C. Harris and Blue Denim, Ted Jones & the Tarheel Boys and The Wells Family.
