Another Re-Post
Hello again,
What a weekend on Pleasure Island! It all started on Friday night with the Pleasure Island Christmas parade. For such a small island, they really do put on one heck of a good parade.
Attached is a short video type presentation of the parade done by my good friend and co-worker, Sandra Hall. (Many of you may know Bill and Sandra Hall. They live just up the street on Fort Fisher Blvd. and have come to many of our neighborhood activities.) She does an excellent job at these things. Take a look and you feel like you were there.
2008 Pleasure Island Christmas Parade (Click to view video).
On Saturday, we had the Floatilla. We watched it down on Canal Street. Got'em On Live Bait Club had a super party with dinner and drinks right there on the water. A good time was had by all and the boats really went all out this year with decorations. I'm not sure, but I would guess that 25 or more boats went past us. Many spun around right in front of us, showing off their decorated boats.
There was also a cookie exchange party in the neighborhood. That was fun also. Thanks for Kris Bell and her husband Richard for hosting that event.

While I am not a fisherman, I do notice that there are a lot of fisherman on our beautiful island this time of year. I love to walk the beach in the early morning with my dog Razz and watch the sunrise over the water. It is during these morning walks that I see and talk with fishermen from time to time. While I haven't experienced the thrill of casting my line into the ocean and feeling the tug of a flounder or spot, it must be quite an experience to get all the fishermen up at the crack of dawn .
Now I don't know the difference between a Virgina mullet and a red drum, but I do read the paper. Below is this week's fishing report direct from Captain John Carty of Affordable Charters as reported in the Island Gazette: On the piers, a few spot, Virginia mullet, bluefish, flounder, black drum, red drum, blowfish and some small croaker. In the surf the red drum have been very plentiful, even some 25 to 35 pounders at night. Some good catches of speckled trout, flounder, black drum, blowfish, Virginia mullet, bluefish and a few gray trout. Inshore, red and black drum, flounder, speckled trout, Virginia mullet, small croakers, and a few gray trout. Offshore, we have no report due to heavy winds. Fishing tip of the week: Surf fishing has been very good this past week. We went and had large catches of red drum with double hook pier rigs with number 4 hooks and using shrimp for bait. The red drum ranged from 5 lb. to 10 lb and they really put up a good fight on a limber rod. Just remember the limits and don't keep anything you aren't gonna eat.
Well, that about sums up this weeks fishing report. Stay tuned, and I'll try and report what's being caught from time to time.

Election - Update
By now, we all know the results of the elections. Whether your candidate won or lost, the good news is that it is over! HURRAY! No more campaign commercials. Maybe now we can get on with the business of turning this economy around.
First of all, congratulations to our own Les Veach, (blue house at 110 Seawatch Way). Les was running for town council in his hometown of Winchester Virginia. Looks like he won by 2 votes. His challenger will probably ask for a re-count and if he does, the results will not be final until close to Christmas, but regardless, we know he's a winner! Congrats Les, Sabra and family.
While the markets haven't shown it, we believe that regardless of the outcome, things will now settle down and begin to improve. We noticed that interest rates for a 30 year, fixed mortgage are currently at 5.75% to 5.85% as of today, 11/12. How long they are going to remain in the 5 to 7% range is anyone's guess, but we hear that we should begin to see interest rates going up. That makes this a great time to buy. Even if prices were to drop another 5% or so, a 1/2 to 1% increase in interest rates can mean higher payments even if the purchase price is lower.
From everything I have read, we could remain slow in the real estate market for the 4th quarter of '08 and probably the 1st quarter of '09. (Although, we have begun to see a real increase in the number of showings on the island.) We then believe that the market will have corrected, prices would have dropped to the point that buyers will be back. We don't think we will begin to see the prices make any dramatic improvement until late 2011 or early 2012.
Regardless of the rest of the country, we believe that there are great deals here on the island right now and right now is the time to buy!

Halloween
Happy Halloween (A little late.)
Halloween seemed to be pretty big this year at Seawatch. Was it just me, or does anyone else feel that there were a lot more trick-or-treaters this year? It seems like in year's past, we would only have 8 to 10 kids, but this year, I lost count after 24 or so. We almost ran out of candy.
Rumor has it that several of the neighbors were spotted at a Halloween/Costume party at the Van Ham's. Seems like a couple of retired Hooter girls won first prize, Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett were a close second and Jimi Hendrix came in third.
Also seen were several motorcycle gang members, 007, a scarecrow, Maxwell Smart and Agent 99, a rather large woman looking for her dog, a pimp, love and war, Janis Joplin, a ref., a couple of doctors, a cave woman, Shriner Wayne Lee from Lodge 56, a tourist, a warrior princess, a Roman god and goddess, some Jones guy from Indiana, a M-I-C-K-E-Y Karen, and many other characters.
What a great party. Can't wait until next year and have already begun to think about my costume...

What Seawatch Means To Me
Hi again,
In trying to think of ways to get others to interact on this blog, I'd like for each of you who actually read this to respond to this question: My favorite thing about Seawatch is...: or I like Seawatch because...:
For me, my favorite thing about Seawatch is the people. Without a doubt, our neighbors are what makes this such a great neighborhood. Whether it is our full-time neighbors, summertime neighbors or weekend neighbors, there is nothing like them. Even if Seawatch wasn't located on a gorgeous stretch of beach, with neighbors like we have, even the desert would be wonderful.
Okay, how about it guys; What do you like best about Seawatch???

Seawatch - Real Estate
Since I am a REALTOR, I guess that the main purpose of this blog is to showcase our neighborhood and the homes that I have for sale here. Over the four (4) years that we have lived in Seawatch, I have bought three properties and sold personal property once. As a real estate agent, I have listed and/or sold numerous Seawatch properties.
I should have a fifth home listed shortly that will be in the $700,000 to $750,000 range. Thanks for visiting my blog and I look forward to any and all comments.
Currently I have four (4) homes and two (2) lots for sale in our neighborhood. Prices for homes range from $1.25 million for a second row home to $625,000 for the pretty green home on the backside of Seawatch. My listed lots are $499,000 and $599,000 with one being on Seahorse and the other on the corner of Seawatch and Seahorse.
To view all of my listings as well as all listings in the New Hanover county area (that are listed in the Multiple Listing Service, MLS), please visit my website at http://www.joycebarnwell.com/.
Here are pictures and a brief description of the properties I have listed:
1. 102 Seawatch Way - 5 Bedrooms, 4.5 Baths - 3983 Sq. Ft.: Priced at $1,250,000
2. 110 Seawatch Way - 5 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths - 2678 Sq. Ft.: Priced at $998,500

Home Owner Association Annual Meeting
The annual Seawatch HOA will be held this Saturday, October 25th. Up until today, (Friday), it was to be held at the pool and was to be immediately followed by the Octoberfest Feast. With the current weather forecast, we are looking for other options for the meeting, and are considering changing the cookout to Sunday.
Kris Bell, HOA Secretary will be emailing out the changes as soon as plans are finalized.
Make it a great day!

Welcome To Seawatch Happenings
Hello, My name is Joyce Barnwell and this is my first attempt at setting up and working with a blog. In fact, until just a couple of days ago I didn't even know what a blog was. (Today, I'm not sure, but I think I do.)
The way it was explained to me is that a blog site is just a site that people can visit and write comments about what's relevant to the blog title. As the "owner" of the blog, it is my job to write a weekly article or three that will be interesting to people who read the blog and that encourages them to make comments on the blog.
I guess a good way to start is to describe our neighborhood. Seawatch consists of approximately 120 homes or lots. We have a pool, tennis court, private beach walkover with rest room facilities and our own private tiki bar.
The Tiki Bar is the local meeting place for neighbors to congregate on Friday afternoons. Neighbors usually bring their beverage of choice and maybe a snack or two to be shared. This informal gathering starts between 4:00 and 5:00, with some of us working folks not getting there until about 6:00. After an hour or two of visiting, plans are usually made as to what we are going to do for dinner. Those wanting to go out usually pick a resturant and a time. Those with previous plans head back home and the remaining neighbors decide the what, where and when of dinner.
Until next time.
